Description

Dried Oha leaves are the preserved, dehydrated form of Oha (or Ora) leaves from the plant Pterocarpus mildbraedii, a traditional leafy vegetable widely used in southeastern Nigerian cuisine.

Fresh Oha leaves are delicate and highly perishable, so they are carefully harvested and dried—usually by air- or sun-drying—to extend their shelf life. Once dried, the leaves become darker in color, slightly brittle, and easier to store and transport.

Before cooking, dried Oha leaves are typically soaked in warm water to soften them. While drying slightly reduces their natural tenderness, they still retain a mild, slightly earthy flavor that blends well with rich soups.

They are best known for their use in Oha soup, where they are added toward the end of cooking along with meats, fish, cocoyam thickener, and palm oil. The leaves help give the soup its characteristic taste and texture.
