Description

Bonga fish (Ethmalosa fimbriata), commonly known as bonga shad, is a small, pelagic fish belonging to the herring family (Clupeidae). It is widely distributed along the Atlantic coast of West Africa, from Mauritania to Angola, and inhabits coastal waters, estuaries, lagoons, and river mouths. Bonga fish is recognized by its slender, laterally compressed, silvery body, forked tail, and small head. Adults typically measure between 15 and 30 cm in length, although larger individuals may occur.

Bonga fish is an important commercial and subsistence fishery resource in many West African countries, including Senegal, Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and The Gambia. It is highly valued for its affordability, rich flavor, and nutritional benefits. The fish is an excellent source of high-quality protein, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D, vitamin B12, calcium, phosphorus, and selenium, making it an important component of a healthy diet.

The species feeds primarily on plankton, algae, and other microscopic aquatic organisms. It is commonly harvested using purse seines, gill nets, and cast nets. To extend its shelf life, bonga fish is frequently smoked, dried, salted, or frozen. It is also consumed fresh, grilled, fried, or cooked in soups, stews, and a variety of traditional dishes throughout West Africa.

Because of its economic importance, bonga fish contributes significantly to food security, employment, and income generation for coastal fishing communities. Sustainable fisheries management is essential to maintain healthy populations and ensure the long-term availability of this valuable species.
